Question:
We're going to visit Sheffield in a couple of weeks - anyone have
any recommendations for restaurants anywhere between
M1-TownCentre-Earnshaw Halls? Style either modern Brit, Italian, French, Indian or Chinese. Price is not a problem. We want to eat real fresh food though. Recognisable fish
or meat, not just burgers (even if good ones) or pizza. Mama and Leonies
looks nice but didn't have any real Italian maincourses like Saltimbocca
or Vittello ai Limone. An authentic Indian or Chinese would be nice
too...
Depends what you like really - for Mexican food, you could try El
Sombrero just off West Street (student drinking haunt) on Regent
Terrace. You are spoilt for choice as far as curry goes. Mama and
Leonies on Norfolk Street (near the crucible) is good for Italian. If
it is lunchtime, you could always try the Fat Cat which does some nice
vegetarian food.
Yes, the key question here is what are you looking for. Greek is poor,
some Middle Eastern, loads of Indian and Italian and American, a few
French, some modern British - also chains like Pizza Express, All Bar
One etc.
If money is truly no object, you could try the Old Vicarage, Michelin
star, Tessa Bramley's country house restaurant. 4 courses runs around
40quid per head:

Otherwise there is a good selection of modern cafe/bistro types running
from Devonshire Green down to the City Hall, loads of trendy fusion /
tapas. British restaurant dining tends to be out-of-town country house deals
like the Vicarage, or in hotels, viz Brasserie Leo in the Charnwood
Hotel.
Italian
Vito's has the sort of menu you're looking for:
www.sheffield-on-the-net.com/vito/
and I have heard good things about Santino's on Ecclesall Road. But most are pizza/pasta/chocolate pancake sort of places - Mamma's is the best of them, Flying Pizza (Pizza Volante) is popular with students.
Chinese
The best evening one is Zing Vaa:

but if you are contemplating Sunday lunchtime then there are also two
good ones for Dim Sum which are Golden Dragon & Mei's, all in the city centre.
Indian
There's a great one just off the Wicker on the way out to Meadowhall
called the Kashmir Curry Centre - home to hippy socialists, get your own
beer from the micro-brewed real ale pub across the road.
Otherwise most are good - better ones are Nirmals on Glossop Road,
Dilshad in Woodseats, and I have heard good things about the new SB
Brasserie down by the railway station.
