About Post Counter
The program was written around the format of exported newsgroup posts from
Turnpike.
I've also seen it work with Agent, and it should work OK with other newsreader
programs, provided that:
1. They export the posts into a plain-text (*.txt) file, and
2. The format in which they show the date and author of each post is similar.
How to use your Post Counter.
In your newsreader program, select the newsgroup, and Export it. This will vary from
software to software, so you'll probably need to fiddle about with a few buttons and
menus, or (gasp) consult the Help file. If you're using Turnpike, open the news-stand,
right-click on the newsgroup, and choose 'Export'. Save it on your Desktop. If you
haven't expired your old posts recently, this could take some time....
Start up
Post Counter, click File/Open, (the default location will be where Postcount.exe is
stored), and select the news file you just exported. The name of the open file will be displayed in the top box.
Enter the search string into the box marked 'Name to search for'. On the Data menu,
choose 'Count Posts'. This might take a few seconds if the text file you're searching
is very big. It'll display how many of your posts are in the file. Choose Data/Get
Dates. Again, this will take a few seconds. In the grid, it'll display the day, date and
time of each post. To save this grid, choose File/Save Grid As. It will save the data
as a *.csv (comma-separated text) file. You'll find you can open this file in Excel,
Word or Notepad. The default program is probably Excel. From whence you can play
with the data to your heart's delight...
